It turns out our Wedding Wishlanterns were used at a wedding she was shooting for and she got some great shots of the special day. Wishlanterns are typically launched around sunset and being a keen but somewhat amateur photographer myself I know how tricky it can be to get good photo’s in this low light. Corey Ann captured the moment perfectly and the filters she used and colors she achieved look really cool.

Imagine the finale to the big day, when the happy couple, and all their guests, release dozens of lanterns, bearing messages of love and luck, into the sky. 

Using lanterns in this way is very much in the tradition of Northern Thailand, for example. Lanterns are known in Thailand as “Khoom Loy”. They are used all year round, for spiritual celebrations and special occasions such as weddings. In one particular festival, the Loi Kratong Festival or Yipeng Lantern Festival has couples and loved ones gathering on the riverbanks to float handmade flower arrangements (Kratong), and release ‘Khom Loy’ together. It is considered good luck to release a ”Khom Loy’, as they represent problems and worries floating away. As a symbol of love and a bright future, the lantern is a perfect component of one of the most important days in our lives.

On a purely decorative level, too, our lanterns are an incredibly economical way to bring color, drama and romance to the celebrations. Historically, lanterns were used in ceremonial practices such as weddings. They were made from white gauze paper and typically had four red paper letters attached. The characters, which adorned the lanterns, included expressions of respect and good luck for the bride and groom. They might also display wishes for “a hundred children” and “a thousand grandchildren”. A modern day couple might find such wishes on the extreme side, but they would certainly appreciate how heartfelt and warm they are.

If you love the vintage style, you have to plan your wedding thinking “vintage look”. You do not have to spend a lot of money to do that. If you have shopped in an Anthropology store, you know what we are talking about. All of the décor in the store is made of recycled material or simple knits. All that you can do by yourself. You can have a truly unique wedding. All you need is your imagination and some time. You can go through all your boxes of buttons you do not use and make necklaces for your bridesmaids for example. Just substitute beads with buttons! There are several tutorials on websites about craft making. Not only will these jewels look vintage, but they will remain a great memory for the bridesmaids from you. You can go through your stacks of old magazines and newspapers and make paper flowers as decorations for each table. You can even use old coffee cans, glue different color paper over them and make peephole lanterns. All of that can virtually be done without you spending any money. One of the great things about being in the Wedding Industry is that we come across couples at one of the most special moments in their life so it’s always a joy when we receive photo’s and stories from their special day.

Katie sent through a link for a video that was created on her wedding day and we were blown away at the high quality videography and the many special moments from the day that were captured perfectly in moving pictures. Milestone Pictures did an amazing job putting it all together. We were also happy to see our Wedding Sky Lanterns score a spot on the video and are proud that we could have been a part of this magical day in a small way.

After this initial flight by the two brothers Joseph and Etienne Montgolfier that floated for 20 minutes from the center of Paris hot air ballooning was born. A huge benchmark in hot air ballooning was made just two years later when Jean Pierre Blanchard flew across the English Channel which was then considered a major step into long distance ballooning. Since then balloonists have crossed both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and have made numerous altitude records.

First, choose a pumpkin that is large and doesn’t have any bruises or moldy stem. Also, the lighter in color the pumpkin is, the easier it will be to carve. Cut the top at a 45 degree angle to ensure that you can put it back on top without it falling through. Use a heavy serving spoon to scrape the inside of the pumpkin. Clean as much as you can and try to keep it even.  Its easiest to first cut out a pattern on paper rather than draw the pattern on the pumpkin itself. Then use a marker to mark the parts that will be cut out of the pumpkin. Create an opening at the bottom of the lantern as well to ensure that it can fit over the candle and while the candle is lit keep the lid off. Best bet though is the flameless candle as it is harmless and easy to put in the pumpkin.
