The Paper Lanterns for Weddings have its roots in ancient Chinese and Thai history. Lanterns were used for all sorts of special occasions as symbols of hope or good wishes. The people of Thailand believe their lanterns are symbolic of problems and worries floating away.

Historically, lanterns were used in ceremonial practices such as weddings. They were made from white gauze paper and typically had four red paper letters attached. The characters, which adorned the lanterns, included expressions of respect and good luck for the bride and groom. They might also display wishes for “a hundred children” and “a thousand grandchildren”. A modern day couple might find such wishes on the extreme side, but they would certainly appreciate how heartfelt and warm they are.

China is rich with proverbs and quotations like these, many of them absolutely appropriate for a wedding ceremony. What about this one: “Married couples who love each other tell each other a thousand things without talking”? Commonwealth Games puts Weddings on Hold

This October will be a big time for Delhi, for its residents and officials of the Sports Authority of India, as the capital gears up to host the 2010 Commonwealth Games. Up until this point, it seems that there have been various organisational headaches for everyone, including effects of a city-wide beautification drive, meaning large piles of rubble have sprung up over the city whilst the building work is taking place.

However, newspapers have recently reported another issue that is affecting residents- most of the 220 halls owned and maintained by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) have been earmarked for use by paramilitary forces, meaning that many of the city’s wedding venues are now out of bounds to the public. Being perpetually in demand for Indian weddings, traditionally crowded and extravagant affairs, many couples have apparently had their big days cancelled because of the games, a statement which the MCD are denying, saying instead that only five couples have had to rearrange a date.

Wedding Customs: Bolivia

We have sadly come to the end of our little wedding wish lanterns blog series, in which we’ve been discovering all sorts about wedding traditions from around the world. To finish off, we wanted to explore a country in South America, so we travel to Bolivia this week, to see what we can see…

- In Bolivian folklore, December is the luckiest month to get married. Of course, residing in the southern hemisphere, December is the height of summer, and most likely to bring good weather.

- Inside the wedding cake, at the very bottom, a ring tied with a ribbon is placed. It is said that the person who receives the ring will be married, or meet the person that they’ll eventually marry, on that same day.

- Almost the opposite of the traditional British/English wedding, the first dance in Bolivia is usually a waltz, which is then followed by speeches, made by the father of the bride and the groom.

For our most recent blog series, in which we discover various wedding traditions from around the world, we move now to South East Asia, and the tiny country of Laos- a place of quiet serenity and unspoilt landscapes, to see how couples celebrate their special day:

- The wedding ceremony itself takes place at the bride’s house, before which the groom and his wedding party will march to the residence, to the sound of beating drums and various other traditional Lao instruments.

- Unlike their neighbours in Thailand, Lao people do not traditionally invite Buddhist monks to any wedding, as the event has nothing to with religion. On occasion, the couple and their families will invite monks to a praying ceremony either before or after the main event; the marriage is conducted by an elder of the village rather than a religious figure.

- The intimate marriage ceremony involves only close family, who witness the tying of the bride and groom’s wrists with white string, and presents being passed between family members. It’s after this hour-long session that the rest of the guests join in for further celebrations.

Something that we feel should be celebrated more often is the diversity and joy that comes from the range of wedding traditions from all around the world. Each nation has different customs, and here at wedding wish lanterns, in our new blog series, we’ll be exploring and finding out about some of them, and sharing what we discover with you. So, to begin with, we look at some of the traditions that have long been observed in Britain:

- Something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue are what the bride often desires to have on her person on her big day. Each object represents a different aspect of their marriage, such as fidelity, keeping old friends close and a happy and prosperous future.

- The age-old tradition of wearing white to symbolise innocence and maidenhood is still mostly complied with, more so than any other custom.

- Marrying a man with a surname that began with the same letter as the bride’s maiden name was once thought to be bad luck, as was practicing her new name by writing it before the big day; this was thought to be tempting fate.
